There's a reason I haven't had a Facebook or Twitter account in years. There's a reason I don't have a smartphone. There's a reason I'm writing a blog post rather than preparing to go see fireworks tonight (or whatever it is the kids do these days). The reason for all these things is that I'm pretty much an isolationist. If you know me, you're not shocked by that particular confession. I'm probably borderline anti-social (I love you all!). Unless I find a reason to change (a reason to start over new, if you enjoy lyrics from old songs you haven't thought about or heard in years), I probably won't. I like being this way, and you like me this way (you like me, right? not like, like-like or anything like that, just like, like).
An unfortunate side-effect of my social illness is ignorance. I truly don't know what the kids are doing these days. I could talk your ears off about that recent SCOTUS case that has you all commenting on each others' posts, but I still could not explain what the heck Instagram is or why seemingly normal people wouldn't shut up about the color of some dress for a week. I also don't know if any of my friends even read fiction or what method they use to do so.
BUT (I put that in caps because we all love big buts), I do know one thing. Market research is something people do, and it is apparently rather important. With that in mind, I was hoping you would all help me out. If nothing else, do so out of charity. After all, one of us should be charitable, and it most likely won't be me. Pick up my karmic slack. Please.
Alright, all I want to know is your reading habits. Maybe tell me what genre you like or list your favorite books. If you don't really read much at all, that's ok. I want to know that too! Most importantly, if you do read, pretty please tell me how you do so. Do you prefer hard copies or e-books? If it's e-books, what device and site do you use to procure and read them? Do you ever buy e-books or is there so many free titles out there that you just don't see the need? Feel free to tell me all of this, anything else, or nothing at all. I'll still be your friend!
P.S. Sorry about all the parentheses. It's an addiction (but I refrain when writing fiction, I swear!).
Full disclosure, I just signed out to anonymously comment on my own blog. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't asking the impossible. But since I'm here, I'll tell you my favorite books (only firsts in a series).
ReplyDelete1) A Game of Thrones by Martin. It's just as good as it gets.
2) The Name of the Wind by Rothfuss. Another author that writes excruciatingly slow but is worth the wait.
3) The Lies of Locke Lamora by Lynch. Like Rothfuss, the debut here was just incredible.
Reading Habits.....hmmm...well, I read every single day. I held fast to just hard copies until I finally gave an e-reader a try. I now love my Kindle Fire. I especially like finding free books to try on Amazon. I have actually branched out a little and learned to love new genres this way. I don't mind paying, but I gravitate toward the free ones when I want to try something new.
ReplyDeleteI would strongly suggest The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. Truly horrible movie, but
one of the few books I tell people they MUST read. Like your The Name of the Wind in your above post it starts out painfully slowly but is so so worth it.
Thanks so much for your input! I'm glad to here that you also like Rothfuss. His prose is just so much more unbelievable to me now that I'm trying this whole writing thing!
